APPENDIX A
1. INTRODUCTION
JDIC is an electronic Japanese-English dictionary program which operates under
MS-DOS on IBM PCs or clones. It functions as:
(a) an English to Japanese dictionary (eiwa jiten), searching for and
displaying entries for key-words entered in English;
(b) a Japanese to English dictionary (waei jiten), searching for and displaying
entries for keywords or phrases entered in Japanese (hiragana or katakana);
(c) a Japanese-English Character dictionary (kanei jiten), capable of selecting
kanji characters by radical, stroke count, Nelson Index number, Halpern Index
number or reading, and displaying compounds containing that kanji.
The executable code, documentation and dictionaries of JDIC are hereby released
to the "public domain". All usage of this program is at the user's risk, and
there is no warranty on its performance. Copies may be distributed by any
means, but at no charge apart from that of the distribution medium.
[Note: this is freeware, not shareware. No payment is sought, there is no
registration system, and all copies are fully functional. Some users, quite
overcome by the availability of this package free, gratis and for nothing, have
been moved to send the author tokens of appreciation. These are gratefully
received, but the author's real satisfaction is in knowing that the software is
being used gainfully by many appreciative users.]
All the Japanese displayed by JDIC is in kana and kanji, so if you cannot read
at least hiragana and katakana, this is not the program for you. The author
has no intention whatsover of producing a version using romanized Japanese.
A companion program to JDIC is JREADER, a text file reader with the capability
of looking up words and phrases in the dictionary.
JDIC is a fully self-contained dictionary package, requiring no special
software or hardware. It has, however, been designed to work in conjunction
with the MOKE (Mark's Own Kanji Editor) Japanese text editor. Its operating
environment is similar to MOKE's, and it can use the same environment variables
and control file as MOKE.
2. QUICK START
(a) obtain the five packed archive files: JDIC23.ZOO, EDICT.ZOO, EDICTJDX.ZOO,
KINFO23.ZOO and JIS16.ZOO.
(b) create a directory on your hard disk (the name \KANJI is suggested).
(c) unpack the archives (you will need the ZOO.EXE program for this).
(d) type "JDIC [Enter]" to start the program. F1 will give a summary of the
options and commands. Simply enter search keys and press Enter. Type in romaji
for the kana keys and conversion to kana will occur as you type. Either Hepburn
or kunrei romaji will work. F3 will toggle between key entry in English,
hiragana and katakana.
3. HARDWARE
JDIC must operate on a PC, XT, AT or compatible with an appropriate graphics
card. It has been written using Turbo C 2.0, uses the Borland Graphics
library, and has been tested on VGA, EGA, CGA, ATT and Hercules cards. It has
also operated under SoftPC on a Unix workstation.
Auto-detection is used to determine the type of graphics card installed, except
in the case of an ATT card, where an environment variable or control file field
setting is needed.
JDIC requires at least 120K of RAM to operate, however for efficient operation
at least 250K should be available. Approximately 3.5Mb of hard disk is
required to hold JDIC's dictionary, index and font files. As it uses dynamic
paging of its files, a disk cache or RAM drive will speed its operation, but
only if they use expanded or extended memory.
4. INSTALLATION
(a) FILES
This program is normally distributed as a "ZOO" archive (JDIC23.ZOO) containing
the following files:
JDIC.EXE (the executable)
JDIC23.DOC (this documentation file V2.3)
JDXGEN.EXE (program to generate the dictionary index file)
JREADER.EXE (executable of the JREADER program)
JREADR23.DOC (documentation of JREADER V2.3)
*.BGI (Borland Graphics drivers for various cards)
RADICALS.TM (list of Nelson radicals for the F5 display)
ROMKANA.CNV (file of romaji to kana conversions)
SORTF.COM (sort utility called by JDXGEN)
KIASCII.FNT (alternative font file for ascii characters)
VCONJ (file of verb & adjective inflections)
You will also need three other archives of dictionary and font information.
They are the kanji dictionary archive: "KINFO23.ZOO", containing:
KINFO.DAT (packed file of Nelson number, stroke count, etc.
information)
KINFO*.IDX (index files for kinfo.dat, indexed by Bushu, etc)
KINFYOMI.DAT (index file for kanji lookup by yomikata)
KINFYOMI.JIS (kanji indexed by yomikata)
(Make sure you have the correct version of these files, as those used by V2.2
of JDIC and earlier will not operate with V2.3.)
The Japanese/English dictionary archive(s), "EDICT.ZOO" & "EDICTJDX.ZOO:
EDICT (Japanese/English dictionary file)
EDICT.JDX (the index file for the dictionary)
EDICT.DOC (information about the dictionary)
(These two sets of archives are available separately because their contents are
being continually updated.)
The archive "JIS16.ZOO" containing the kana/kanji 16x16 bit mapped font files:
K16JIS1.FNT (the 3490 JIS1 characters)
K16JIS2.FNT (the 3388 JIS2 characters)
(The K16JIS*.FNT files are also included in the MOKE1.1 distribution in the
MK11K16.ZIP archive file. Another source is KD100.ARC, the KD distribution
file. If you use MOKE 2.1 or later, you will not need these files, as JDIC will
also use the "KIJIS16.FNT" file as an alternative.)
(b) DIRECTORY
A directory should be created on the hard disk for holding JDIC's files. If you
are already a MOKE user, JDIC's files should be stored in the MOKE directory
(probably \KANJI.)
